Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations at Met

The spring 2012 exhibition organized by The Costume Institute of The Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met) is Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations. The exhibition, on view from May 10 through August 19, 2012, explores the striking affinities between these two Italian designers from different eras. Inspired by Miguel Covarrubias’s satirical “Impossible Interviews” for Vanity Fair in the 1930s, curators Harold Koda and Andrew Bolton orchestrate conversations between these iconic women to suggest new readings of the designers’ most innovative work.

The exhibition is made possible by Amazon.

Additional support is provided by Condé Nast.

“Given the role Surrealism and other art movements play in the designs of both Schiaparelli and Prada, it seems only fitting that their inventive creations be explored here at the Met,” said Thomas P. Campbell, Director and CEO of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. “Schiaparelli’s collaborations with Dalí and Cocteau as well as Prada’s Fondazione Prada push art and fashion ever closer, in a direct, synergistic, and culturally redefining relationship.”

The evening’s Honorary Chair is Jeff Bezos, Founder and CEO of Amazon.com. Co-Chairs are actress Carey Mulligan, designer Miuccia Prada, and Anna Wintour, Editor-in-Chief of Vogue. This fundraising event is The Costume Institute’s main source of annual funding for exhibitions, acquisitions, and capital improvements.

The exhibition is organized by Harold Koda, Curator in Charge, and Andrew Bolton, Curator, both of the Met’s Costume Institute. Film director, screenwriter, and producer Baz Luhrmann is the exhibition’s creative consultant, and has created a series of filmed elements for the exhibition. The production design for the films is by Luhrmann's longtime collaborator, Catherine Martin. The exhibition design is realized by Nathan Crowley, who serves as production designer (he was creative consultant for the Met’s exhibitions Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy and American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity). All mannequin head treatments and masks are designed by Guido Palau.

The design for the 2012 Costume Institute Gala Benefit is created by Crowley and Raul Avila (who has produced the Benefit décor since 2007) with Luhrmann as creative consultant.

The Exhibition
In the galleries, iconic ensembles by Schiaparelli and Prada are presented alongside short videos of simulated conversations between the two designers directed by Luhrmann, focusing on how the women explore similar themes in their work through very different approaches.

“Juxtaposing the work of Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada allows us to explore how the past enlightens the present and how the present enlivens the past,” said Koda.

“The connection of the historic to the modern highlights the affinities as well as the variances between two women who constantly subverted contemporary notions of taste, beauty, and glamour,” added Bolton.

American Idol needs Fashion

Fashion lovers, Jennifer Lopez's style isn't the only reason to tune into American Idol this season. With Tommy Hilfiger as the guest designer, style has taken a more prominent role than it has in season's past. Three of the top female finalists have made their marks with both their voices and their style: Skylar Laine, Jessica Sanchez and Elise Testone. Sixteen-year-old Jessica, the frontrunner in the competition, loves to rock sparkle and a big ballad while she channels her on-stage persona Bebe Chez. Skylar sings country like the best of them, but can also switch gears and kill it with mainstream pop; her fashion sense is a mix of the two as well. And Elise is a '70s rocker at heart, both in her song selections and her - Janice Joplin esque style. We may not have the vocal talent of these AI hopefuls, but we can certainly dress as well as they do.

Marvel Comics fans were in heaven on Wednesday, April 11, in Hollywood, as the much-anticipated "Marvel's The Avengers" premiered at the El Capitan Theatre. For all their favorite superheroes made the scene, from Robert Downey, Jr., who reprises his Iron Man role in the action flick, to Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, the character who turned up for the first time in "Iron Man 2."

Putting on those skin-tight leather catsuits to play her character is exactly what Johansson wants to be doing at this point in her career; the 27-year-old told reporters at an earlier press conference that she's in for the long haul with Black Widow.

"It's not often that you play a character that you know you can franchise, that you know you can branch out," Johansson said. "It's a first for me, really. So, the possibilities are endless. And this character's had such a long story; she's been around for forty years, so there's a lot in there. So if the fans are into Black Widow, then I will be there. If they build it, I will come!"

And build it they did, as writer-director Josh Whedon joined Stan Lee, Marvel's heart and soul, in creating the new film. Jam-packed with most of the company's key heroes, "Marvel's The Avengers" brought screaming crowds to Hollywood Boulevard, all out to see their favorites.

There were the heroes we've seen in earlier Marvel movies: Chris Evans, who plays Captain America; Chris Hemsworth, who is Thor; Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury; and Mark Ruffalo, the latest of a string of actors to play the Hulk. And other Marvel characters abounded on the red carpet as well: two-time Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner who plays Hawkeye, Tim Hiddleston as Loki, and Cobie Smulders, who is best known from the hit television series "How I Met Your Mother," as Maria Hill.

Other cast members who got swept up into the night's giddy excitement included Clark Gregg, who escorted his wife Jennifer Grey; Stellan Skarsgard, who arrived along with his son, "True Blood" hottie Alexander; and producers Jon Favreau and Kevin Feige.

Famous fans of big action-adventure movies clamored for a seat in the theater, too. The Walt Disney Company now owns the Marvel franchise, so Disney channel favorites were everywhere, from Debby Ryan, Janel Parrish, Shay Mitchell to Bella Thorne and Kat Graham. Seth Green made the scene, too, as did Karina Smirnoff, Audrina Patridge, Mario Lopez, Aisha Tyler, Chelsie Hightower and Richard Grieco.

Avril Lavigne designs line of nail Polish

Singer Avril Lavigne has created a range of edgy nail polish designs for top beauty company Sally Hansen.
The Sk8er Boi hitmaker, who already has a fragrance brand and clothing line Abbey Dawn, has extended her fashion empire by releasing a limited-edition collection of self-adhesive nail strips for Sally Hansen’s Salon Effects.

She tells Women’s Wear Daily, “This is pretty much the coolest thing… I’m a really visual person; I like creating, and I love to have fun with colours. I think this offers self-expression, and it’s a really smart, versatile way to show your style. I think my fans will really like it, because it’s easy and simple and fun.

“I was really excited… since they’re super quick. You clean your nails, peel the strips and apply them, file and go. I’m superfast at it, so it takes me like five minutes to do my nails. And it’s super cool because the designs that I came up with are my personal style and vibe – they’re rock ‘n’ roll and fun and bright and colourful. You have sparkles and little stars – they are cute.

“For me, I’ll be flying on a plane and be like, ‘S**t, I need to do my nails.’ I can do these on a plane; I’ve done them in the car.”

New Fashion

Fur coats and trim dominated the runways this fall with fox clearly the fur of choice seen throughout many of the collections. While some designers kept it simple with dyed fur coats and vests, others incorporated fur trim in clever ways on sleeves, skirt panels and collars. The stark color palette for fall primarily consisted of neutral or muted tones. However, pops of color appeared in teal, plum and magenta from a few designers
